History of the Ship Wrecks in Cancun

The Admirable Class was the largest and one of the most successful classes of minesweepers in the US Navy. Their job was essential to the safety and success of U.S. naval operations during World War II.

  • C-55 USS SCUFFLES (AM 283), renamed ARM Teniente Juan de la Barrera C-55, was sunk in Cancun, Mexico, in the year 2000 for diving purposes. Today it is home to thousands of inhabitants of the ecosystem that develops here.
  • C-58 USS Harlequin (AM 365) was named ARM General Pedro Maria Anaya C-58. There is confusion with the A08 boat “Aldebaran,” a school ship, and the C-58, but the only General Anaya was sunk in Cancun for scuba diving purposes. As of 2007, Aldebaran remained in active service with the Mexican Navy The C-58 is used as an artificial reef for scuba diving. The C-58 lays in Cancun’s ocean floor, divided in two pieces after hurricane Wilma, Stern and Bow
